  • 1.5 cups unsalted butter room temperature
  • 1.5 cups dark brown sugar packed firmly
  • 18 oz semi-sweet chocolate chips or dark chocolate chips for deeper flavor
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract pure vanilla extract for richness

Preparation Steps

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 10x13 inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang to lift the bars later.
  • In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and sugar together, stirring frequently until completely combined.
  • Add vanilla extract and stir, then bring the mixture to a light simmer. Allow it to cook for 4-5 minutes, without stirring, until it thickens.
  • Remove from heat and pour the mixture evenly over the graham cracker and almond layer in the baking dish.
  • Place the pan in the oven and bake for 8-10 minutes until the edges are slightly darker and bubbly.
  • Remove the tray, sprinkle the chocolate chips over the toffee mixture, and let it sit for 2-3 minutes for the chocolate to melt.
  • Using a spatula, spread the molten chocolate evenly. Allow the bars to cool at room temperature for 20 minutes before chilling in the refrigerator for an hour.
  • Lift the bar slab from the pan using the overhang, then slice into squares with a sharp knife or snap into uneven pieces.

Notes

Store the bars in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week, or refrigerate for up to two weeks. For extra crunch, try adding a sprinkle of sea salt on top before the chocolate sets completely.
