  • 1 cup warm water 100°F - 110°F
  • 2.25 teaspoons active dry yeast or 1 packet
  • 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil plus more for brushing
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 0.5 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon dried Italian herbs or a mix of oregano and basil

Preparation Steps

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir and let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  • Add olive oil, flour, and sea salt to the yeast mixture. Stir until a sticky dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise in a warm place for 20 minutes.
  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Divide the dough into 12 pieces. Roll each piece into a 10-inch rope and place on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Mix Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, and Italian herbs. Sprinkle over the breadsticks.
  • Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown. Brush with olive oil before serving.

Notes

For a spicier kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the herb mixture. Store any leftover breadsticks in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
