It’s perfect for family dinners or when you’re craving a warm, nostalgic meal made with love.

Ingredients

For the Hamburger Steaks:

  • 1 1/2 lbs (680g) ground beef
  • 1/2 cup (50g) breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) milk
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp (30ml) olive oil (for frying)

For the Gravy:

  • 2 tbsp (30g) butter
  • 2 tbsp (15g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups (480ml) beef broth
  • 1/4 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 tsp thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

  1. Prepare the Hamburger Steaks:
    • In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
    • Divide the mixture into 4-6 equal portions and shape them into oval patties.
  2. Cook the Steaks:
    • Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sear the hamburger steaks for 3-4 minutes on each side until browned but not fully cooked. Remove and set aside.
  3. Make the Gravy:
    • In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until lightly browned.
    • Gradually whisk in the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until thickened, about 3-5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Assemble and Bake:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the seared hamburger steaks in a baking dish. Pour the prepared gravy over the top, ensuring the steaks are well-covered.
    • Bake uncovered for 25-30 minutes, or until the steaks are fully cooked and the gravy is bubbling.
  5. Serve:
    • Let the bake rest for 5 minutes before serving. Pair with mashed potatoes, green beans, or crusty bread for a complete meal.

Notes

  • Add Veggies: Include sliced mushrooms or caramelized onions in the gravy for added depth of flavor.
  • Make Ahead: The hamburger steaks and gravy can be prepared a day in advance and assembled before baking.
  • Substitutions: Swap ground beef for ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option.
  • Storage: Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave.
