This homemade taco spice mix is bursting with flavor, far surpassing store-bought packets. It's incredibly easy to make and perfect for seasoning ground beef, chicken, or vegetables for your favorite tacos and Mexican dishes.

Taco Spice Mix

  • 4 tablespoons chili powder such as New Mexico red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 0.25 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 2 tablespoons ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon kosher salt
  • 1 tablespoon freshly ground black pepper

Preparation Steps

  • In a small bowl, combine the chili powder, red pepper flakes, cayenne pepper, dried oregano, smoked paprika, ground cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, kosher salt, and freshly ground black pepper.
  • Stir well until all the spices are thoroughly mixed and evenly distributed.
  • Store the homemade taco seasoning in an airtight container, such as a glass mason jar, in a cool, dark place for up to 6 months to maintain freshness.

Notes

Use approximately 2 tablespoons (about 3 teaspoons per serving) of this homemade taco seasoning per pound of ground meat (beef, turkey, or chicken) or for a similar quantity of vegetables. Adjust to your taste preference for more or less spice.
