Instructions
Preparation Steps
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour until smooth. Gradually whisk in milk until thickened.
Remove from heat and stir in cheddar cheese, salt, and pepper.
Layer potatoes and onions in the prepared baking dish, pouring cheese sauce over each layer.
Bake for 60 minutes, or until potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
For a richer flavor, use heavy cream instead of milk.
