This recipe creates a decadent purple velvet cake with a rich, moist crumb and a creamy cream cheese frosting. Perfect for birthdays or special occasions!
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round baking pans.
In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
Stir in purple food coloring until desired shade is reached.
Divide batter evenly between prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes before inverting onto a wire rack to cool completely.
