  • 1.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon baking soda
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 0.25 cup orange zest

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 0.25 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 0.25 cup orange zest

Cake Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • In a separate bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla extract.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Stir in orange zest.
  • Pour batter into prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let cool in pans for 10 minutes before inverting onto a wire rack to cool completely.

Frosting Instructions

  • In a large bowl, cream together butter and powdered sugar until smooth. Add heavy cream, vanilla extract, and orange zest. Beat until light and fluffy.
  • Once the cake is cool, frost the top of one layer with frosting. Top with the second cake layer and frost the top and sides.
  • Garnish with additional orange zest, if desired.
