Oooey Gooey Butter Bars

These Oooey Gooey Butter Bars are a classic St. Louis dessert with a chewy blondie-like base and a rich, decadent cream cheese topping.

Ingredients
  

For the Crust

  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1.5 cups all-purpose flour

For the Topping

  • 1 package cream cheese softened (8 ounces)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 0.5 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preparation Steps

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x13 inch baking pan.
  • In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.

  • Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.

  • Gradually mix in the flour until just combined.

  • Spread the crust mixture evenly into the prepared baking pan.
  • In a separate bowl, beat together the cream cheese and powdered sugar until smooth.

  • Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.

  • Pour the topping mixture evenly over the crust.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the topping is set and lightly golden.
  • Let cool completely in the pan before cutting into bars. For best results, chill before serving.

Notes

These bars are best enjoyed at room temperature or slightly chilled. They can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
