  • 1 cup granulated sugar preferably caster sugar
  • 0.25 cup unsweetened cocoa powder for color and taste
  • 0.5 teaspoons baking powder for leavening
  • 0.25 teaspoons salt to balance sweetness
  • 0.5 cups butter softened at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract for flavor
  • 2 large eggs at room temperature
  • 1 tablespoon red food coloring to achieve red velvet color
  • 0.5 cups powdered sugar for coating

Preparation Steps

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, mix the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  • In another bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, followed by the vanilla extract and red food coloring.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  • Roll the dough into 1-inch balls and coat each ball with powdered sugar.
  • Place the balls on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes, or until cookies are set but still soft in the center.
  • Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
