How to Create the Ultimate Beef and Mushroom Skillet

This savory beef and mushroom skillet is a delightful dish featuring succulent beef smothered in a creamy mushroom sauce. Perfect for a cozy dinner at home.

  • 1.5 lbs beef sirloin, thinly sliced Choose grass-fed for better flavor.
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 cup chopped onions Yellow or white onions work best.
  • 8 oz cremini mushrooms, sliced Can substitute with white button mushrooms.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup beef broth Low sodium is preferable.
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch Mix with water for thickening.
  • 1 tsp thyme, dried Use fresh thyme for a stronger flavor.
  • 0.5 tsp salt To taste, as needed.
  • 0.5 tsp ground black pepper Freshly ground.

Preparation Steps

  • Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Add the beef slices to the skillet and cook until browned on all sides. Remove and set aside.
  • In the same skillet, add the chopped onions, mushrooms, and garlic. Sauté until the onions are translucent and the mushrooms are tender.
  • Pour the beef broth into the skillet and bring to a simmer. Stir in the heavy cream.
  • Mix cornstarch with a bit of water to make a slurry, and add to the skillet. Stir until the sauce thickens.
  • Return the beef slices to the skillet and sprinkle with thyme, salt, and pepper. Mix well to coat the beef with the sauce.
  • Simmer for 5 more minutes, allowing flavors to meld. Serve hot with mashed potatoes or rice.

Notes

For an extra depth of flavor, deglaze the skillet with a splash of red wine after browning the meat.
