Hot Fudge Pudding Cake

A rich and decadent dessert that bakes into a warm, gooey chocolate pudding beneath a tender cake layer. Perfect served warm with vanilla ice cream.

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 0.75 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 0.5 cup packed brown sugar
  • 0.25 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1.25 cups hot water

Preparation Steps

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8-inch square baking dish.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, granulated sugar, 2 tablespoons cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  • Stir in milk, melted butter, and vanilla until smooth. Spread batter evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  • In a separate bowl, mix brown sugar and 1/4 cup cocoa powder. Sprinkle evenly over the batter.
  • Pour hot water evenly over the top (do not stir).
  • Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until the top is set and a pudding layer has formed underneath.
  • Let cool slightly before serving. Serve warm, ideally with vanilla ice cream.

Notes

For best results, serve immediately while warm. The cake will continue to absorb moisture as it cools, so leftovers may be slightly denser.
