Homemade French Onion Soup

A classic French onion soup with rich, caramelized onions and a savory broth, topped with toasted bread and melted cheese.

  • 4 cups onions thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 4 cups beef broth low sodium
  • 1 teaspoon thyme dried
  • 1 loaf French baguette sliced
  • 1 cup Gruyère cheese grated

Preparation Steps

  • Melt the butter in a large pot over medium heat, add onions and cook until caramelized.
  • Add beef broth and thyme, simmer for 30 minutes.
  • Preheat oven to broil. Ladle soup into oven-safe bowls.
  • Top each bowl with a slice of baguette and Gruyère cheese, broil until cheese is melted and bubbly.

Notes

For a deeper flavor, try adding a splash of dry sherry or white wine while cooking the onions.
