French Onion Tart Recipe

A classic French onion tart with a buttery crust and a rich, caramelized onion filling.

  • 1 package refrigerated pie crust
  • 3 large yellow onions thinly sliced
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cups gruyere cheese shredded
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.25 teaspoon black pepper

Preparation Steps

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and caramelized, about 20-25 minutes.
  • Unroll pie crust and place in a tart pan. Trim and crimp edges.
  • Spread caramelized onions evenly over the crust.
  • In a bowl, whisk together eggs, heavy cream, salt, and pepper.
  • Pour egg mixture over onions. Sprinkle with Gruyere cheese.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until crust is golden brown and filling is set.

Notes

Serve warm or at room temperature. Pairs well with a green salad.
