Prep : 10 Total : 25 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef 80% lean
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese or Irish cheddar
  • 1 large onion thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp whiskey preferably Irish whiskey
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley optional, for garnish

Instructions

  • Prepare the whiskey sauce: In a small saucepan, combine whiskey, brown sugar, Dijon mustard, and Worcestershire sauce. Cook over medium heat for 3–5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens. Remove from heat and set aside.
  • Cook the onions: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook for 7–8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they caramelize and become golden brown. Set aside.
  • Form the burger patties: In a mixing bowl, season the ground beef with salt and pepper. Divide the meat into 4 equal portions and shape them into patties.
  • Grill or pan-fry the burgers: Heat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the burger patties for 4–5 minutes per side, or until desired doneness. In the last minute of cooking, top each patty with a slice of cheese and cover to melt.
  • Assemble the burgers: Toast the buns lightly on the grill or in a toaster. Spread some of the whiskey sauce on the bottom half of each bun. Add the cooked patty, followed by the caramelized onions. Top with the other half of the bun.
  • Serve and garnish: Serve the burgers with a sprinkle of fresh parsley if desired, and enjoy!

Notes

  • You can substitute the whiskey with beef broth for a non-alcoholic option.
  • For extra flavor, add a fried egg on top of the burger.
  • Serve with crispy fries or a side salad for a complete meal.
  • Customize the toppings with lettuce, tomatoes, or pickles if you prefer.
