Chopping board
- 1 lb ground beef 80% lean
- 4 hamburger buns
- 4 slices cheddar cheese or Irish cheddar
- 1 large onion thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 2 tbsp whiskey preferably Irish whiskey
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh parsley optional, for garnish
Prepare the whiskey sauce: In a small saucepan, combine whiskey, brown sugar, Dijon mustard, and Worcestershire sauce. Cook over medium heat for 3–5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens. Remove from heat and set aside.
Cook the onions: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook for 7–8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they caramelize and become golden brown. Set aside.
Form the burger patties: In a mixing bowl, season the ground beef with salt and pepper. Divide the meat into 4 equal portions and shape them into patties.
Grill or pan-fry the burgers: Heat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the burger patties for 4–5 minutes per side, or until desired doneness. In the last minute of cooking, top each patty with a slice of cheese and cover to melt.
Assemble the burgers: Toast the buns lightly on the grill or in a toaster. Spread some of the whiskey sauce on the bottom half of each bun. Add the cooked patty, followed by the caramelized onions. Top with the other half of the bun.
Serve and garnish: Serve the burgers with a sprinkle of fresh parsley if desired, and enjoy!
