  • 12 pieces cooked breakfast sausages ensure they are fully cooked
  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour sifted
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 1.75 cups milk preferably whole
  • 2 large eggs beaten
  • 5 tablespoons unsalted butter melted and cooled
  • 3 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 tablespoons maple syrup plus more for serving
  • canola oil for frying
  • 12 wooden skewers

Preparation Steps

  • Prepare your sausages by cooking them according to your package instructions. Let them cool.
  • In a large bowl, mix together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  • In another bowl, whisk milk together with eggs, melted butter, vanilla extract, and maple syrup.
  • Combine the wet and dry ingredients gently. Do not overmix - lumps are fine.
  • Heat canola oil in a deep pot until the temperature reaches 350°F.
  • Skewer each sausage with a wooden stick. Dip sausage into the batter, coating evenly.
  • Fry each sausage until golden brown, approximately 2 minutes per side.
  • Remove and drain excess oil on a paper towel. Serve warm with maple syrup.

Notes

You can prepare the batter a day ahead and store it in the fridge. Make sure to bring it to room temperature before using. For a healthier version, consider substituting some of the flour with whole wheat flour.
