Classic Chocolate Birthday Cake

This classic chocolate birthday cake is rich, moist, and guaranteed to satisfy the chocoholics in your life.

  • 1.5 cups all-purpose flour Make sure it's sifted
  • 1.5 cups granulated sugar Preferably organic sugar
  • 0.75 cups unsweetened cocoa powder For rich chocolate taste
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs At room temperature
  • 1 cup whole milk Or buttermilk for more moistness
  • 0.5 cup vegetable oil Can substitute with melted coconut oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract Pure vanilla extract is best
  • 1 cup boiling water To enhance cocoa flavor

Preparation Steps

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  • Add the eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla to the flour mixture and mix on medium speed until well incorporated.
  • Carefully stir in the boiling water (batter will be thin), then pour evenly into the prepared pans.
  • Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.
  • Let cakes cool for 10 minutes in the pans, then remove and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For an extra flavor boost, you can sprinkle chocolate chips over the batter just before baking.
