  • 1 loaf day-old French bread cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 4 cups diced apples peeled and cored
  • 10 large eggs
  • 2.5 cups whole milk
  • 1.5 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup brown sugar packed
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter melted

Preparation Steps

  • Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
  • Spread half of the bread cubes evenly in the bottom of the dish.
  • Add a layer of diced apples over the bread cubes.
  • Top with the remaining bread cubes.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cinnamon, brown sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  • Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread and apples, pressing down gently to soak.
  • Cover and refrigerate overnight to allow the flavors to blend.
  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) the next morning.
  • Bake in the preheated oven, covered, for 30 minutes. Uncover and continue baking for 30-35 minutes until golden and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Let cool slightly before serving warm.

Notes

This dish can be customized with chopped nuts for crunch. Ideal for prep ahead of time and baking fresh in the morning.
